Beyond Medication: A Psychiatrist’s Perspective on Faith and Mental Wellness

We live in a fast-paced world of modern psychiatry, where pharmacological solutions often take center stage. Pharmaceutical companies churn out medications for every conceivable mental health diagnosis under the sun. On the other hand, the faith community often shies away from any involvement in the management of those with mental health problems.

The treatment of mental health problems has traditionally been approached from a medical or therapeutic perspective, focusing on psychiatric care, medication, and evidence-based therapies. In recent years there is growing recognition of the role spirituality in complementing these treatments. Spirituality refers to a broader sense of connection to something greater than oneself, involving personal values, purpose, and meaning in life. Combining spirituality with conventional medicine offers a holistic approach to mental health treatment, recognizing the interplay of body, mind, and soul.

Medication is not universally effective. Besides, some patients cannot tolerate the undesirable side-effects of medication. Medication does not address the deeper and existential concerns individuals face. Spirituality, in contrast, addresses questions about life’s meaning, suffering, and purpose—areas often untouched by traditional therapies. When spirituality is integrated with medical treatments, it provides a holistic view of the patient, treating not just the mind and body, but also the spirit. This comprehensive approach can enhance the healing process, making patients feel more understood and supported at all levels of their being.

Spirituality has been shown to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Practices such as meditation, prayer, mindfulness, and communal worship often lead to emotional calm and improved psychological resilience. These practices can create a mental framework that helps patients cope with their conditions, build resilience, and manage negative emotions. Such spiritual interventions complement medication and therapy by empowering patients to take an active role in their healing process.

For many, spirituality is not just a personal practice but also involves belonging to a faith-based or spiritual community. These communities provide emotional support, fellowship, and a sense of belonging. Social support is known to be a protective factor in mental health, reducing the risk of isolation and depression. When individuals battling mental health issues feel they are part of a community with shared values and beliefs, they are more likely to engage in self-care and adhere to treatment. Integrating spirituality into mental health care encourages patients to connect with these supportive networks, fostering healing relationships.

Many of my patients who suffer from mental health problems such as anxiety and depression often ask the question why they should succumb to mental health problems. Their search for meaning is not a clinical but existential one. Their search for meaning can only be addressed from a spiritual perspective. It involves the meaning and purpose of life. They feel disconnected, lost, or hopeless. By engaging with their spiritual beliefs, they can find meaning in their experiences, even in their suffering. This sense of purpose can be a powerful motivator in recovery, helping them to persevere through difficult times and adhere to treatment plans. The combination of medical intervention and spiritual support thus allows patients to regain control over their lives in a more meaningful and enduring way.

While integrating spirituality into mental health care can be beneficial, I recognise the ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity involved. Not all my patients are spiritual, and some have different or non-religious belief systems. At all times, I respect the individual beliefs of my patients and only incorporate spirituality when it aligns with the patient’s values.
